Welcome to the May 2007 openCollabNet Technical Newsletter. This month we started three new projects on openCollabNet that you can join. The first one is for CollabNet Desktop – Eclipse Edition, which tightly integrates CollabNet Enterprise Edition with Eclipse. It includes Subclipse for version control but extends this with issue management directly from within your Eclipse IDE. You can download the package from openCollabNet and participate in the support community at http://eclipse.open.collab.net.
As you probably know, Subversion 1.5 will include merge tracking functionality. To support this important development, we started an Early Adopter Program on openCollabNet so we can all help the Subversion developers with active testing and you can prepare for the future (http://merge-tracking.open.collab.net).
The third project we started is called SVNbinaries, a community for the creation of Subversion binaries and bindings and improving build scripts (http://svnbinaries.open.collab.net). A Mac OS X client binary is already available for download from this project.
With over 7000 members, 170.000 unique visitors and nearly 40.000 downloads, openCollabNet is proving to be a successful community for Subversion users and CollabNet customers. Thank you for your participation and I hope to see you in our technical discussion forums (http://open.collab.net/forums.html).
Best regards,

In this Issue:
CollabNet Desktop – Eclipse Edition
If you're actively banging out code, you have noticed a drawback to web-based issue trackers and project management apps. They are convenient and a lot quicker than LAN-based apps but when it's time to update a bug report you have to switch between Eclipse and Firefox, NetBeans and IE, or whatever you use. You already get a productivity boost from version control integration with your IDE so why not have an IDE that is also integrated with your issue tracking system. CollabNet wants to address this with a tight integration between your IDE and the CollabNet platform.
We started with Eclipse, building on the Mylar plugin (mylar.eclipse.org), we made it so you can connect to your issues in CollabNet Enterprise Edition without leaving Eclipse. It's called CollabNet Desktop - Eclipse Edition, it's free, and next to issue tracking integration it comes with all the advantages of Mylar: automatic task focusing, reductions in scrolling and clicking around, and so on. Subclipse is included so the CollabNet Desktop integrates with Subversion as well.
We're releasing version 1.0 today. To check it out, point your Eclipse update manager to this address: http://downloads.open.collab.net/eclipse/update-site/e3.3 (or /3.2 if you use Eclipse 3.2).
The plugins are also available for download at: http://downloads.open.collab.net/cip.html. To get started, visit http://eclipse.open.collab.net. You can poke around to see what it is all about and ask questions in the discussion forum.
Merge Tracking Early Adopter Program
Subversion 1.5 (expected this summer) will include much anticipated merge tracking functionality. CollabNet wants to support this important development with a Merge Tracking Early Adopter Program. The goals of this program are to assist the Subversion committers with active testing, collect enhancement requests and give you early access to the feature so that you can plan for the future.
If merge tracking is important to you, please join the early adopter program and together with other openCollabNet community members help the Subversion development team make the merge tracking feature as robust as possible. The program will only be successful if members participate actively. If you choose to join us, please be willing to commit to: Downloading and installing the software.
Spending significant time testing and reviewing the merge tracking feature.
Providing feedback and promptly reporting defects.
Actively participating in the discussion forum.
We look forward to seeing you in the Merge Tracking Early Adopter program at http://merge-tracking.open.collab.net.
Subversion binaries project
The Subversion project is very active in publishing regular releases but does not officially endorse or maintain any binary packages. Instead, you download binaries from volunteers, including CollabNet, which provides Subversion binaries for Windows, Red Hat Linux and Solaris. The advantage of this volunteer system is that Subversion is available for many platforms but the disadvantage is that for certain platforms the availability of Subversion binaries has been spotty or has not stayed in sync with Subversion releases.
On June 1st we will start a new community project on openCollabNet: SVNbinaries. The goal of this project is to create binaries for a wide range of platforms and ensure continuity through the support of a community rather than individuals. Next to creating Subversion binaries we will work on improving build scripts and we'll ensure that bindings for many languages are available for download.
Read more and learn how to participate at: http://svnbinaries.open.collab.net.
Subversion client binaries for Mac OS X
CollabNet has seeded the SVNbinaries project with a command line client for Mac OS X, something that was hard to come by in the past. The OS X binary is a complete Subversion 1.4.3 command line client installation. Using the Mac graphical installer, you can install the binary on any 10.4.x OS X operating system. The binary is "universal" so it runs on both the Intel and PPC based systems. The binary contains the Subversion executables and all necessary/dependency headers and shared libraries. This means that you can compile other applications against the included libraries. The package also includes the JavaHL bindings for those of you using Subversion natively from a Java application. http://downloads.open.collab.net/binaries.html.
Submerged on Merge Tracking
Submerged, our blog about Subversion (http://blogs.open.collab.net/svn) continues to do very well with two posts a week and a strong audience of readers. We had over 2000 readers per day for our Subversion Merge Tracking posts:
Introducing Merge Tracking: http://blogs.open.collab.net/svn/2007/05/introducing_mer.html
Merge Tracking in 1.5: http://blogs.open.collab.net/svn/2007/05/the_subversion__1.html
CollabNet Subversion update
We recently posted CollabNet Subversion 1.4.3 server and client for Sun SPARC Solaris 10. The Red Hat package of CollabNet Subversion was also upgraded to 1.4.3. (http://downloads.open.collab.net/collabnet-subversion.html).
CollabNet Subversion is Subversion compiled, tested and certified by CollabNet and its users get a discount on our technical support packages. Read about our roadmap for CollabNet Subversion at http://blogs.open.collab.net/svn/2007/05/collabnet_subve.html.
