OpenOffice.org is an open source project sponsored by Sun Microsystems. CollabNet delivered an open source network for Sun's popular StarOffice desktop productivity suite. Sun released the code for its word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications suite to developers in October 2000 under open source licenses. With over 7.5 million lines of code this is the largest single release of open source code in history. OpenOffice.org had over 30,000 binary and 33,000 source code downloads in three months and 1,700 developers joined the project.
"...this is the single largest source code contribution to date to the open source community. We are also pleased to be working with CollabNet, who helped us deliver the source code as quickly as possible, and who provided the consulting, training, and open source strategic advice we needed to make this project successful with the development community."
Marco Boerries, Vice President and General Manager, Webtop and Application Software, Sun Microsystems
