CollabNet-Powered Forge.mil named One of Ten "Great .Gov Web Sites"
Government Computer News Special Report Recognizes DoD’s Collaborative Software Development Initiative
July 29, 2009 —CollabNet, the leader in distributed application lifecycle management (ALM) solutions, today announced that the Department of Defense’s (DoD’s) Forge.mil has been named one of ten “Great .Gov Web Sites” by a Government Computer News Special Report. The report indicates that the sites named “embrace the Web’s full potential, and ... can offer ideas for other agencies seeking to improve their own sites.” Forge.mil provides the DoD and its contractors with a collaborative software development environment that promotes the cross-program sharing of software, system components, and services in support of net-centric operations and warfare. Forge.mil is powered by CollabNet TeamForge, the leading application lifecycle management platform for distributed software development teams, and CollabNet Subversion, the leading version control and software configuration management (SCM ) solution for distributed teams.
An archived webcast covering the goals and objectives of Forge.mil and the incorporation of open source dynamics into DoD software development is available at http://www.carahsoft.com/events/collabnet.php.
“It’s terrific that GCN has recognized the significance of the Forge.mil initiative,” said Bill Portelli, chief executive officer, CollabNet. “CollabNet TeamForge is helping the Department of Defense to transform the way they develop software, saving taxpayer money and enabling critical systems to be deployed more rapidly.”
CollabNet TeamForge provides Forge.mil users with a wide range of capabilities, including software version control, bug tracking, requirements management, and release packaging, along with collaboration tools, such as wikis, discussion forums, and document repositories. The largest and most successful open source software communities in the world, including java.net, openoffice.org, and tigris.org, are also based on CollabNet TeamForge.
CollabNet partnered with Carahsoft, a trusted government IT solutions provider, to deliver TeamForge to the DoD’s information systems group, DISA, for the Forge.mil initiative. Carahsoft delivers CollabNet-powered solutions to the DoD under an ESI Blanket Purchase Agreement for Open Source Solutions.
Four more components of Forge.mil are expected to be launched in 2009: CertificationForge, which will support agile certification; ProjectForge, which will provide private project portals; StandardsForge, which will drive collaborative standards development; and TestForge, which will provide on-demand software testing tools.
