Branching and Merging Strategies for Subversion 1.5

Later this year the Subversion community will release Subversion 1.5 which will include merge tracking capabilities (when merging code from branches, Subversion will remember what code has already been merged where and when).

This is an important new feature that substantially improves efficiency and traceability. Merging becomes easier now that Subversion will automatically handle merge operations in which the user specifies a range of changes that overlaps with changes already merged to the target. Moreover, Subversion will record what changes have been merged to what branches, providing traceability that is key to industries such as aerospace, automotive and medical equipment.

Merge tracking facilitates the adoption of more sophisticated branching policies. With Subversion 1.5 on the horizon, many companies will want to re-evaluate their branching policies and adopt new ones that more closely fit the need of their development teams.

This webinar explains how to develop and implement branching policies that best fit your organization. The presenters will also show how to use Subversion 1.5's merge tracking functionality to support parallel development on different branches.

Subversion® is the fastest growing version control system for distributed development teams and its rapid adoption is a phenomenon in small and large organizations. Recently evaluated to be the Sole Leader among Standalone SCM Solutions by Forrester Research, it is taking the developer world by storm.
